Nitai’s Deep Connection with Radharani Part 1

Many devotees undermine the importance of taking shelter of Nitai before approaching Radha Krishna by claiming that Nitai is situated in sakhya rasa, as Baladev, so He cannot perform the function of giving one Radha Krishna in madhurya rasa. This conception is completely erroneous and detrimental to the path of our devotional service. This is one of the prime causes why Kaliyuga has been able to establish its firm influence. This exactly why even after executing devotional service for millions upon millions of lifetimes, no one is able to reach
the stage of spontaneous devotion to Radha Govinda which the shastras claim as Ragamarg. It is due to this very reason that no one
is able to attain prema even after performing rigorous sadhana.

Nityananda Prabhu’s role in giving us Radharani’s shelter is extremely
crucial and unnegligible.

Radharani is the instructor of all those souls situated in madhurya
rasa, and Nitai is Adi Guru, the primeval spiritual master. Without the mercy of the spiritual master, no one attains Radha Krishna. Guru
kripay pai bhakti lata bij. The creeper of devotional service is sowed in the heart by the mercy of the spiritual master. All the spiritual masters are a manifestation of Lord Nityananda and His potency. In fact the
truth is that Nitai is the only spiritual master. Srila Narottama Dasa Thakura writes, “Sri Nityananda Prabhu is the sum total of all gurus. Without his mercy, no one can attain Sri Sri Radha and Krishna.”

Furthermore, Srila Prabhupada goes to the extent to proclaim that
even to realize one’s constitutional spiritual form, the mercy and spiritual empowerment of Sri Balaram is mandatory.

“Balarama means guru-tattva. Balarama represents guru. Yasya
prasadad bhagavat-prasdau. If we want to understand Caitanya
Mahäprabhu, if we want to understand Krishna, then we must
take shelter of Balarama. Nayam atma bala-hinena labhyau. This
bala- hinena labhyaù, this Vedic injunction, means “Without the
mercy of Balaräma you cannot understand, you cannot realize
your spiritual identification.” So that Balarama comes as
Nityananda Prabhu. Balarama haila nitai. Therefore we must take
shelter of Balarama.”

This is why Nitai is the ultimate reservoir of all rasas for Krishna,
because the sambandha which the eternal jivas have with Krishna is
established through Nitai first. Krishna is defeated and completely
conquered by Nitai’s love, and thus all His loving relationships pass
through Him. So it is actually an indisputable fact that the jiva’s direct relation with Gaur Krishna is through Nityananda Balaram only. There is no service to Krishna which does not pass through Nitai first. Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya, a very learned associate of Gauranga
Mahaprabhu well versed in the conclusions of all the shastras,
glorifies Nitai as the topmost relisher AND bestower of rasa.

80} rasa-jno 81} rasa-daataa ca
82} rasa-bhoktaa 83} rasaashrayah
(Nitai Ashtottara Satanam)

80} rasa-jno : Nitai is consummately cognizant and adapt
in the science of all loving mellows {rasa}.
81} rasa-daataa ca : He is the causeless bestower of pure
loving mellows of love of God.
82} rasa-bhoktaa : He is the crown and summit of all
enjoyers of pure loving mellows..
83} rasaashrayah : He is the supreme and exclusive abode, shelter, and haven for all the nectarean mellows of
pure love.

Thus, Nitai is also the only way we will be able to regain our original
position and return to the spiritual world to Radha Krishna.This is another reason why sambandha gyan is awakened by Nitai’s mercy only. Without Nitai, it is IMPOSSIBLE to enter into the divine pastimes of Gauranga Krishna in Goloka.

Srila Prabhupada’s Guru Maharaj, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati
Thakur Prabhupada, also firmly establishes this point in his magazine the Harmonist that without Nityananda Prabhu it is not only impossible to realize one’s swarupa, it is also impossible to render any form of service to the Supreme Lord.

“Individual souls are under the direction of Nityananda. They
receive their service of Sri Gaurasundara, i.e., of Krsna, at His hands.”

Srila Vrindavan das Thakur has revealed the very same fact in
Chaitanya Bhagavat,

“If Lord Nityananda bestows mercy and qualification on anyone,
then he can serve the Lord.”
(CB Adi 1.45)

Have any of our Acharyas here mentioned that Nitai can give us
service in every form except madhurya rasa? No. They have clearly stated that it is only through Nitai that we will receive our spiritual form and service. It is needless to say that madhurya rasa is already included in this pretext.

Another confidential fact which many are unaware of is that Nitai is actually present in the madhurya lila as Ananga Manjari. As Baladeva,

Nitai does not directly engage in the madhurya rasa pastimes due to
being situated in suddha sakhya and also the elder brother of Krishna.
But Sri Ananga Manjari, who is the dearmost beloved younger sister
of Srimati Radharani and constantly serving Sri Radha Shyamsundar
in shringar rasa, is actually the internal potency of Balaram and
completely non-different from Him.

Srila Vrindavan das Thakur sings
in his heart touching bhajan antare nitai bahire nitai:

radhara madhuri ananga manjari nitai nitu se seve
koti sasadhara vadana sundara sakha sakhi baladeve

Nitai as Ananga Manjari eternally serves sweet Srimati Radhika.He is non-different from Baladeva, whose beautiful face resembles millions of moons and is surrounded by sakhas and
sakhis.

radhara bhagini syamasohagini sava sakhigana prana
janhara labari mandapa sajani shri mani mandira nama

The sister of Radharani, Ananga Manjari, is very dear to Sri
Syama, and she is the life and soul of all the sakhis. She
decorates the arena of the temple named Mani Mandira.

nitai sundara yogapitha dhare ratna simhasana seje
basana nitai bhushana nitai vilase sakhira majhe

Nitai sustains the yogapitha and becomes a throne for the Lord
to rest on. Nitai is also the dress and ornaments. He enjoys
pastimes with the sakhis.

As we can see from the above verses, Ananga Manjari’s role in
Radha Krishna’s nitya lila is very significant and crucial. Vrindavan das Thakur is authentically revealing the variety of services Nitai Balaram expertly performs as Ananga Manjari in order to enhance the beauty of Radha Krishna’s confidential pastimes and increase Their pleasure manifolds.

Ananga Manjari is one of the chief manjaris of Srimati Radharani and
every soul situated in madhurya rasa enters into the nitya lila only through Her mercy, as we saw in the case of Kamala Manjari
(Bhaktivinoda Thakur). She is the very life and soul of Radharani,
which is why Her kunja is situated at the center of Radhakund, the
highest lilasthali of Radha Krishna and nondifferent from Radha
Herself. She is so dear to Radha Kunjabihari, that They do not miss to come and exhibit Their loving pastimes in Her grove every single day after the Radhakund lila.
This very same Ananga Manjari appears as Shrimati Jahnava
Thakurani, Nityananda Prabhu’s eternal consort, in Gaur lila.

sri radhika priyatama rupe gune anupama
karunate jagata uddhari
baladeva shakti dhama dhorila jahnava naam
purve chila ananga manjari
nityananda anuraga, eka dehe dui bhaga
dekhaila jive kṛpa kori
jaya jaya sri jahnava gopinatha vallabha
bhuvana mohana mana hari

“All glories, all glories to Sri Jahnava, the beloved of Gopinath, who enchants even the enchanter of the world (Krishna)! She is Sri
Radhika’s dearmost sister, Her form and qualities are matchless and
out of great compassion She redeems the world”

Baladeva’s shakti is named Jahnava, who was previously known as Ananga Manjari. Out of love for Nityananda She kindly showed two parts in one body, to bestow mercy on the fallen jivas.”

However, it is only via the causeless mercy of Sri Nityananda Prabhu that a soul attains shelter of Shrimati Ananga Manjari. He is the one who recommends a soul to Ananga Manjari, who then takes that soul into Radha’s camp. So even to attain Shrimati Jahnava devi’s mercy, we still require the causeless of Lord Nityananda Prabhu. So madhurya rasa is impossible without the causeless mercy of Lord Nitai.
